Now this could be seen as a good thing or a bad thing depending on your preference. However, there is one thing that changed greatly from the first game and that has to be the fact that in Penumbra: Black Plague you don’t feel nearly as alone and isolated as you did in Penumbra: Overture. The flickering lights in the hallways, the electrical surges from cut wires, and the somewhat overly clean areas that seem strange in a place that appears in such disrepair. This game is set in a broken down laboratory, which to me at least feels creepier than the first game’s setting. I especially like that the developers decided to go with a different setting than before so that the game feels different than the first game. The atmosphere for this game is again excellent. This puts an immediate tension and fear in the gameplay when you have to huddle in the corner as an “Infected” searches the premises for you while calling out to you. These are strange humanoid creatures that will search for you incessantly and if they find you they will kill you and “The Infected” are completely indestructible (except in one specific case) meaning you have to hide and run from them. Due to that change the main enemy in this game you will be facing will not be demon dogs, giant spiders, or enormous worms, but instead “the Infected”. This game is immediately scarier than the previous game because as I stated above the removed combat system. Second, another feature changed in this game was changing the heavy reliance on notes to solve puzzles that was heavily present in Penumbra: Overture. So, to just eliminate the possibility of even being able to successfully defeat the enemy forces the player to hide. This makes sense, since part of the point of making the combat awkward was so that you would be more likely to try and avoid enemies.

First, the combat of the first game has been mostly removed thus getting rid of the awkward combat system and putting more of an emphasis on stealthily avoiding enemies rather than attacking head on. The gameplay is pretty much the same as the first game, however, there has been some things that have been noticeably improved. There he finds out that the facility had been overridden by creatures known as “the Infected” and realizes that he may be infected himself. However this time he finds himself in an abandoned research facility. The game begins with the protagonist, Philip, waking up in a locked room which came about from the ending of the previous game. Penumbra: Black Plague was released in America on Februfor the PC and Mac and was once again developed by Frictional Games and published by Paradox Interactive. In the direct sequel to Penumbra: Overture the game developers actually looked at fan feedback throughout development of the game that would soon be known as Penumbra: Black Plague.
